Vassouras is located on the right bank of River Preguiças, 40 minutes from Barreirinhas, a small fishermen village and a stop of the boats going down the River towards Caburé and Mandacaru.
Its area is part of Environmental Protection Area , called Pequenos Lençois(Little Lençois) ,that belongs to the municipality of Tutoia and has the same characteristics of the Grandes Lençois Maranhenses(Great Lençois), with sand dunes interspersed with freshwater lagoons formed during the rainy season.
The beggining of it is close to the Atlantic Ocean and by the wind force blowing sand through the years toward the River Preguiças , it now ends at its bank with huge dunes along its shore.Perhaps the most visible difference between them is a more yellowish tone of the dunes of the Pequenos Lençois as compared to white tone to the dunes of the Grandes Lençois.
There are pleasant lagoons for swimming close to the riverbank. There are 2 kioskis belonging to a native habitant offering beer, coconut water and nibbles to the traveler. A small group of Prego monkey is the local attraction,wild but tame, are a great fun and delight for adults and children. Do not feed them with sweets, candies and other inadequate food.
If you want to feed them, its possible to buy bananas at Dona Lucia kiosk. A must visit.
