When to go

That's the question everybody asks. After all, what's the best time to go to the Lençois?

Well, it is hard to answer considering that everyone has different interests.

Most often one hears that the best time to go to the Lençois is after the rains, which usually fall from January/February to May/June, depending on the year, that means, arriving July/September when the rainy season has ended and lagoons are filled up, a time when the Lençois show its most exuberant form.

That is true especially for those coming to see exclusively the Lençois Maranhenses. But for those wanting to see more of the rest of the region avoiding the traditional routes, this is a period when the tourist may find difficulties of moving around, mainly to those points of interest like Santo Amaro, for example, because the accessing trails are usually flooded and cut by several swelled up streams to the extent of not allowing crossing, which ends up by limiting the visit to places that otherwise should not be missed.

To pinpoint the right period of the year so that all favorable conditions are met is really hard because the rain cycles and their consequences are highly unpredictable.

June is a must for those intending to enjoy and get to know the beautiful capital of São Luis and who value the cultural aspect of the trip, for it is the time for Saint John's festivities.

It is indispensable to watch the several groups' presentations that take part in the most popular festivals of the Northeast and which in São Luis is displayed with its own peculiarities, filled up with richness of rhythms and colors.

This month, therefore, if rains have already stopped, is a great opportunity to ensure at least two good options, the full lagoons and São Luis's Saint John's festivities.

For those enjoying carnival, for example, February/March, albeit not being the best moment to see the Lençois it ensures fun for the most fanatic partygoers. The carnival of São Luis is danced on the streets, the crowd following the different blocks very similar in color and animation to those of Olinda and Salvador. If the rain is not yet too intensive by then and despite the fact that the lagoons are practically dry you can easily move about the whole region and have access to the different visitation points and enjoy São Luis's carnival as well.

Summing up, weight the pros and cons according to your interest and choose the best time of the year. Whatever your choice we will be here waiting for you and helping you make the best possible option.
